Bonded House

Bonded House is a transformative reinterpretation of traditional materials, designed to challenge the conventional aesthetic of a modern family home. Positioned on a snug corner block, this project showcases a refined architectural approach that seamlessly blends form and function. The home’s defining feature is its stacked brickwork forms, bridged by a central light well. This light well not only serves as a dramatic visual element but also plays a crucial role in flooding the interior with natural light and ensuring cross-ventilation throughout the home. The design fosters a harmonious relationship between the indoors and outdoors, with large openings blurring the boundaries between the two.

Landscaping plays a pivotal role in softening the pared-back, minimalist design. The surrounding garden is seamlessly integrated with the structure, creating a tranquil setting that enriches the home’s sense of space. The careful selection of materials, such as brick, is carried through both interior and exterior, providing continuity and reinforcing the idea of a structure that feels as though it has been carved from a single volume.

Transparency and permeability are key themes in the design of Bonded House. The central staircase serves not only as a functional connection between the levels but also as a sculptural focal point. The perforated metal banisters of the staircase allow light and views from the courtyard to filter inward, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. This design choice enhances the overall sense of openness within the home, offering a lightness that contrasts with the strength of the brick forms.

The layout of Bonded House has been thoughtfully designed to cater to the needs of a growing family. Upstairs, the children’s bedrooms, family bathroom, and a secondary living space offer privacy and flexibility. Meanwhile, the ground floor is dedicated to communal living spaces, including a large kitchen, dining, and living area, along with a flexible office space, laundry, and powder room. The master suite, strategically separated by the central stair, creates a secluded sanctuary for parents, offering retreat while maintaining a strong connection to the rest of the home.

Maximizing space and functionality on a compact urban site, Bonded House strikes a perfect balance between refined design and family-friendly living. With its innovative use of materials, light-filled interiors, and thoughtful spatial planning, it sets a new benchmark for contemporary residential design on smaller sites. The project embodies a holistic approach to modern living, where every design element works together to enrich the lives of its inhabitants.
