Camberwell Residences
Twin townhouses with a light exterior and distinct interior personalities for two separate clients. These generous 290m² homes provide a sensitive development solution on one site which doesn’t dominate the neighbourhood, rather the project supplies dual architectural homes that consist of 4-bedroom & 4-bathrooms and have ample outdoor & internal living spaces with secure off street carparking.
Sharp pitched rooves with silver timber clad forms and black features mirror one another in the street. The external presentations of each dwelling create a cohesive design that provides uniformity & separation in the buildings whilst internally the homes reflect the unique taste of the residences who live there. High raked ceilings, void areas and well-positioned glazed windows & doors help to ensure both dwellings feel like a spacious, stand-alone house, that just happens to share a common wall.
Making the most of the single inner-city block to provide affordable high end housing whilst addressing the needs of two growing families was key to the success of the project. The houses needed to contemporary and light filled, whilst providing practical & functional floor plans to encourage lots of natural light inside, be practical for everyday routines and entertaining family and friends.
The floorplan of each of the dwellings has a guest bedroom & bathroom at the front entry on ground level, which is buffered by the hidden laundry, powder room, bonus living space & internal courtyard. This arrangement provides independence and privacy from the larger open-plan kitchen, dining, living room, and outdoor entertaining areas. Upstairs, seclusion is paramount with the master suite heralding at the front of the homes, illuminated by large windows, pitched ceilings, and softened with sheers. The second-storey arrangement allows children’s bedrooms & bathroom to be set apart from the adult’s retreat, thanks to the division the stairwell provides, allowing all family members to coexist on the one level with privacy & connection.
Interiors schemes for both homes were created to impart modern, transitional living. The clients wanted sleek & creatively designed spaces which represented the architectural language and remained harmonious with their individual style. Mixing classic elements of light and dark were combined with natural, warming oaks, timber paneling, and textured concrete and stone. Designer fixtures selected complement the sophisticated aesthetic & concealed elements offered moments of surprise whilst maintaining consistency in the design integrity and a clean finish.
The open-plan kitchen, dining & living is flanked on both sides by outdoor spaces which are accessed by large sliding doors that can open right up for cross ventilation and seamless integration between indoors and out.
The back of the property faces a busy street, to accommodate private car parking opportunities and additional storage, a stand-alone garage was incorporated with turntable for easy exiting. The area is blocked out from the road with black battened timber. On the other side the space is open to the garden area for access. The structure blends into the landscaping providing a built-in seating area, and framework for a vine covered wire cabling system that would add vertical greenery elements and hide the utility zone.
